Our history - Solhøy Bigård

Trøgstad

Solhøy Bigård, located in Trøgstad, Norway, has a rich history spanning eight decades and is a strong example of how traditional beekeeping can be combined with modern sustainability. From starting as a small family-run apiary to becoming a player known for its natural raw honey, Solhøy Bigård has maintained its focus on quality and environmental responsibility over the years.

Since 1938

The story of Solhøy Bee Farm began in 1938 when Håkon Dahl founded the bee farm in Trøgstad, with a focus on respecting both nature and bees. Beekeeping became a family tradition, and Håkon's grandson Kjartan learned to take care of the bees at an early age. In 1975, Kjartan got his own beehive and began to contribute more to the business. After Håkon's death in 2006, Kjartan took over the apiary and continues to run it according to his grandfather's principles of care and sustainability.

Natural Honey production

Today, Solhøy Bee Farm is a successful beekeeping operation with over 300 beehives. They focus on producing raw honey that is completely natural, without additives or processing, making it popular with consumers seeking high quality and health benefits. The apiary follows an environmentally conscious strategy, where the beehives are placed in carefully selected locations with abundant access to wild flowers, such as in Trysil and Telemark, to ensure a pure and natural product.

Beekeeping tradition that respects nature

At Solhøy Bee Farm, all work is done by hand, and Kjartan works close to the bees without gloves, which creates a harmonious relationship between beekeeper and bees. This method contributes to high quality honey production. To promote sustainability, he makes sure the hives have clean bottom boards every spring, giving the bees a good start to the season. This careful management and selection of the location of the beehives results in raw honey of the highest quality with flavors that reflect the Norwegian nature.

Tradition and future in harmony

Solhøy Bigård continues to build on traditions from 1938, where the focus has always been to produce natural honey of the highest quality and to protect nature and bees. By combining experience with sustainable methods, Kjartan works to ensure a long-term future for the apiary and contribute to the importance of pollination in the ecosystem.
